Irish Festival, Bad Sassendorf, Germany
August 20th 2006

Irish festival was held by German Klub für Terrier for two of the Irish terrier breeds: Glen of Imaal and our Wheaten. Dog show was one of the events of Festival and Maureen Prokosch from the USA was invited as judge. We all probably remember wonderful Wheatens from her kennel Newkilber, well known dogs Newkilber Camelot and Newkilber The Quiet Man. I found interesting to have comments on some of my dogs from this lady. I was also interested about her opinion on types of Wheatens and on her favourite type. Does she look for the same type of Wheaten like were her beautiful dogs?

I have entered Pamppy and went for the trip. I found 56 entered Wheatens in catalogue, what promissed nice competition. But looking around I had to search for Irish coated Wheatens. After the show I found, there were just 16 of them. All judged dogs got critique, first four got some price. This show was not official, so no marks and no certificates were given. In all classes at least one Irish Wheaten with standard coat type was placed. But you can see from the pictures how big differencies were in placed dogs from some classes.

I was not able to find the type of Wheaten, which is prefered by the judge. I also did not find any relationship between coat type and colour and placement of the dog. You can see Pamppy on next picture, she was placed as fourth (from 4 entered female, so the last one). From her critique:"... good coat colour and texture..."

But what was written in critiques of followed dogs about coat type and colour?!

I have no idea! Some of them were highly placed.

You can see on next picture best male (left) and best female and best of breed (right).

Many hundreds of kilometers trip had for me, as a breeder of standard Irish type of Wheaten just one result. The breed type of Wheaten is dramaticaly changed, numbers of dogs of original Irish type are rapidly decresing, the same about puppies. Long time breeders, who made a lot for the breed in the beginning now reverse their shoulders towards the standard. What is their reason? Standard is / should be the law, regulation, rule for the breeding. Is it possible to preserve original, Irish standard type of Wheaten? I am shy to get an answer.
