HISTORY

Wheaten coloured terrierrs were always in Ireland. They are mentioned even in 200 years old historical sources. Those terriers helped in agricultural farms with killing rodents and also with chaseing of cattle and hunting of rabbits. The target breeding was never focused on huning abilities. Today Wheaten is not a hunting terrier, you can walk with your Wheaten in fields and woods without troubles. On the opposite site, Wheaten is able to kill rodents around the house
up to the present time.

There is probably common history with Kerry Blue Terrier in antient time. This two breeds are very similar in body and character. Long time ago there was a ship wreck in Tralee bay. The only survived passenger was big blue dog who founded the breeding
mysterious atmosphere of Tralee bay
of Kerry Blue Terrier.
In the beginning of Wheaten breeding there were black pups in litters which became blue in adulthood. Today it is not desirable.

The organized breeding of Wheatens became in the beginning of previous century. Among the first breeders were Dr. Pierce and Mr. Bourke. The breed was officially recognized in the year 1937 and introduced at St. Patrick´s day. Mrs. Maureen Holmes modernized the breed to todays type. Wheatens from her kennel Holmenocks are found in pedigrees of many quality Irish coated dogs. Unfortunately she is not alive any more and we can not learn
from her.

The breed was changed very much after exporting from the country of origin. Especially breeders in the U.S.A. did not have true idea of the breed type, they used close inbreeding. The coat type was dramatically changed, structure and colour became different. The body changed also, American Wheatens are bigger. Described Wheatens do not correspond to the standard. The United States are not members of FCI, have their own standard. European breeders are doing mistakes using this dogs in breeding. More info you will find at section coat.
